Shared experiences like networking events, workshops, conferences, trainings, even online meetups, have the potential to shape the future of your business in ways you can’t predict.
It only takes one conversation, one idea, or one relationship to change everything.
Sometimes it’s the content you learn about.
Sometimes it’s the energy in the room.
And sometimes, it’s the person sitting next to you.
But what makes peer networking events so powerful for notaries goes deeper than just inspiration.
It’s about building something most notaries never intentionally create:
A true professional ecosystem.
This is a business that can feel isolating. You’re often working alone, figuring things out in real time, solving problems on the fly.
Peer relationships change that.
They give you:
Support from people who understand exactly what you’re navigating
Perspective from others trying new strategies in different markets
Momentum from being around people who are actually taking action
And over time, something even more valuable forms:
A mastermind effect.
You start sharing ideas, refining approaches, and seeing what’s working across multiple markets and specialties. You’re no longer guessing, you’re learning in real time from a network of people in the trenches.
That alone is worth showing up for.
But there’s also a very practical side to this that too many notaries overlook.
You don’t have to offer every service under the notary umbrella.
In fact, you probably shouldn’t.
Online notarization, apostilles, loan signings, estate planning support, fingerprinting, I-9 verifications, weddings… trying to do it all can dilute your focus and overwhelm your business.
But your clients don’t care about your business model.
They have a problem that needs to be solved.
And the notary who can help solve more of those problems, whether directly or through a trusted referral, becomes the one they remember.
That’s where your peer network becomes a strategic advantage.
When you build relationships with other notaries:
You gain access to services you don’t offer
You can refer clients with confidence, knowing they’ll be taken care of
You position yourself as a resource, not just a vendor
That’s how you stay top of mind.
That’s how you become the go-to.
And then there’s the reality of life…
You can’t be everywhere at the same time.
You will take time off. You’ll get sick. You’ll have conflicts.
A strong peer network means:
Someone can step in and serve your client when you can’t
You don’t lose opportunities, you redirect them with integrity
And often, those referrals come back around when your peers are in the same position
This is how real businesses operate. Not in isolation, but in collaboration.
So yes, the friendships matter. The support matters. The shared laughs and stories matter.
But make no mistake:
This is also about building capacity, resilience, and reach into your business.
Whether you’re attending a national conference or logging into a virtual event, the value isn’t in just showing up, it’s in how you participate.
A few simple ways to optimize your experience:
Don’t just attend. Decide what you’re looking for, whether it is connections, ideas, partnerships, and stay open to what you didn’t expect.
Don’t wait for the “perfect moment.” A simple introduction can lead to something meaningful. Those who get the most value from events connect with others faster.
Skip small talk when you can. Ask things like:
“What’s working for you right now?”
“What are you focused on building this year?”
Or, my favorite, “What are you most excited about in your business right now?”
Engage in sessions. It feels safe to be the “fly on the wall,” but you’ll get a better return on your investment of time, energy, and money, if you ask questions and share insights. Visibility at these events builds familiarity, and familiarity builds trust.
If you meet someone aligned, connect after (or even during) the event. A short text message, LinkedIn request, or quick Zoom call turns a moment into a relationship.
Build at least five of these peer events into your year, not because you “should,” or because I told you to.
Do it because the right room, at the right time, can expand your thinking, your network, and your business in ways you simply can’t create on your own.
And in this industry, you don’t have to do it alone.
And if you’re reading this thinking, “I need to get better at this,” you’re not alone.
Networking, relationship-building, asking better questions, following up, these are skills. And like any skill, they get sharper with practice.
That’s exactly what we do inside the High Performance Notary community.
Every day, notaries are practicing real-world connection like reaching out, following up, building relationships, and staying visible in their markets. Not perfectly, but consistently.
You don’t have to wait for the next conference or event to start building this muscle.
You can start today, for free, alongside a community of notaries who are doing the same.
This isn’t just about who you meet a few times a year, it’s about who you become in the process of showing up every single day.
